Master Katara

Katara was a brave and beautiful Waterbender, a true master.
She was born in the Southern Water Tribes, to Chief Hakoda and Kya. She was the last Southern Waterbender as the ruthless Fire Nation had taken them all prisoner. When she was a little girl the Fire Nation came to her village and one soldier slipped into her family's hut, where he forced Kya, Katara's mother, to tell him the identity of the last Waterbender. To protect Katara, she claimed she was the Waterbender and to take her prisoner. But he killed her instead.

Hakoda set off with the other men to fight in the war, leaving Katara's brother Sokka in charge. When out fishing, Katara discovered the huge iceberg that held Aang. From then on she was dedicated to helping him. Since she was the only Waterbender in the South, she was untrained, so she would learn from going to the North Pole with Aang. But upon arrival, they were told in the North, women weren't allowed to be taught to fight. Master Pakku would teach Aang but not Katara. Aang taught Katara on the side until Pakku caught them. He said he would no longer teach Aang. Katara was so furious when even after he accepted her apology he called her a little girl that she challenged him to a battle. She was winning at first, but he won. Then he saw her necklace. It was a typical Northern Water Tribe betrothal necklace which her mother had given her. He claimed he had given it to the love of his life, Kanna, Katara's grandmother. He agreed to teach Katara, and her skills were so great that she started training Aang as his official Waterbending Master. She became a great healer also.

She later learned BloodBending from Hama, but detested it so much she had it declared illegal. She married Avatar Aang and had three children, Bumi, Kya, and Tenzin. She later taught Avatar Korra.
